EMB vs DST, PES and JEF: Which Embroidery File Should I Keep?
One of the most important embroidery-software habits is keeping an editable master design rather than only the machine stitch file.
What is an EMB file?
Wilcom EMB is an object-based design format. It can retain shapes, outlines, colours, stitch types, densities, underlay, pull compensation, trims and other design information, making the design much easier to edit and resize later.
What are DST, PES and JEF?
These are machine-oriented embroidery formats. DST is widely used by commercial machines, PES is used by Brother/Baby Lock workflows and JEF is used by Janome/Elna/Kenmore workflows. Machine files primarily contain stitch information rather than the complete editable design intelligence of an EMB file.
Which should I keep?
Keep the EMB master wherever possible, then export the machine format you need for production. That gives you far more flexibility when a customer returns asking for a size, colour or layout change.
