Choose by how the zip opens

  • Closed-end: stays joined at the bottom. A common choice for dresses, skirts, trouser flies and pockets.
  • Open-end: separates completely, as on a jacket or cardigan front.
  • Two-way open-end: separates and can open from the bottom or top, useful for longer coats and jackets.
  • Reversible or flip-over: choose a suitable puller for a garment worn either way round. This is different from simply having two sliders.

Coil, moulded or metal?

Coil zips use a coiled element and suit many garments and accessories. YKK VISLON® uses moulded plastic elements. Metal zips use metal teeth and give a different finish and feel. Choose the construction and weight for the project and check the individual product specification.

Choose by project

  • Dress, skirt or wedding dress: compare closed-end dress zips and concealed zips. A concealed zip is designed to hide its elements in the seam.
  • Light jacket or cardigan: start with an open-end zip of suitable weight and length.
  • Long coat: consider a two-way open-end zip for access from the bottom.
  • Leather jacket: match the original construction, gauge, opening type and finished length rather than buying by colour alone.
  • Sleeping bag or reversible garment: check the required slider access and opening arrangement; not every long or two-way zip is suitable.

Measure before you order

Measure the working zip length between the end stops, including the appropriate bottom box or stop, rather than the spare tape extending beyond them. For a replacement, compare with the original zip laid flat and closed. Product measurements and size choices are shown on each listing.

Our common nominal pairs include 61 cm / 24 in, 66 cm / 26 in, 71 cm / 28 in and 76 cm / 30 in. The centimetre figures are rounded size labels; 1 inch equals 2.54 cm.

Colour and matching sliders

Use the colour code as well as the colour name when matching a YKK shade. Screens and faded garments can make a visual match difficult. A replacement slider must match the chain type, gauge and configuration; a matching colour or stamped number alone is not enough.

Questions and answers

Can a closed-end zip replace a jacket zip?

A jacket front normally needs a separating open-end zip. A closed-end zip stays joined at its base.

Is a two-way zip automatically reversible?

No. Two-way describes slider operation; reversible describes how the puller can be accessed. Check the required configuration.

Can I shorten a zip?

It depends on the construction and opening type. Choose the correct length where possible and ask before altering a separating zip.

Which length should I order for an existing garment?

Measure the original working zip between its stops or box and match the required opening type. Do not include spare tape when comparing the nominal length.
