Choosing a quilting sewing machine
Piecing and smaller projects
A compact machine can be a practical choice for quilt blocks, smaller quilts and workshops. The Fabric Mouse QuiltCompact includes a quilting extension table. The HD80 and FEIYUE FY710 offer separate machine-only and quilting-table packages; choose the table package if you want that extra support.
More room for larger quilts
Look at the space to the right of the needle as well as the table size. An extension table supports the fabric around the machine; a longer arm gives more room to manoeuvre the quilt through it. Models such as the Janome Horizon 8200QCP, MC9480 and Brother VQ2 offer generous working space.
Feeding and control
Dual feed, speed control and needle up/down can help with layered work and accurate turns. For free-motion quilting, check the machine’s feed-dog controls and which quilting feet are supplied. Accessories vary by model and package.
