Choosing the Right Machine Starts with the Right Advice
Buying a sewing or embroidery machine is an investment, and with so many models available it's not always easy to know which one is right for you.
You may have watched videos online, read reviews or had recommendations from friends, but nothing compares to seeing a machine in person and having the opportunity to ask questions as you go.
That's exactly why we offer demonstrations.
Our demonstrations aren't about giving you a sales pitch or trying to sell you the most expensive machine. They're about understanding what you want to make, showing you the machines that best suit your needs and giving you the confidence to make the right choice.
Whether you're buying your very first sewing machine, upgrading to embroidery, or considering a commercial multi-needle machine for your business, we're here to help.
Free Demonstrations
Our standard machine demonstrations are completely free.
To make sure you receive the best experience, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Demonstrations are usually carried out by Stuart, whose product knowledge and practical experience allow him to answer detailed questions and tailor the demonstration to your needs.
Although customers are welcome to call in and ask if a demonstration is available, we can't always guarantee that Stuart will be in the showroom. Booking ahead helps us make sure the right person is available and enough time has been set aside for your visit.
Booking a Demonstration
Most demonstrations last around 45 minutes, giving plenty of time to discuss your requirements, compare machines and try them for yourself.
Demonstration appointments are generally available:
-
From 9:30am onwards
-
Preferably during the morning
-
With the last booking normally around 1:00pm
Our demonstration availability changes from week to week, so we normally confirm available appointments each Monday. If you're planning further ahead, we're happy to check future availability before arranging your visit.
For larger commercial machines, such as multi-needle embroidery machines, weekend demonstrations may sometimes be available by prior appointment.
Every Demonstration Is Different
No two customers are the same, so we don't follow a script.
Before we start demonstrating machines, we'll spend a little time getting to know you.
We'll ask questions such as:
-
What types of projects do you enjoy?
-
What machine are you currently using?
-
What would you like your next machine to do that your current one can't?
-
Are you buying for a hobby, education or business?
-
Are there new techniques you'd like to learn in the future?
Understanding how you sew helps us recommend the machines that genuinely suit your needs, rather than simply showing every model in the showroom.
Compare Different Machines
If you're deciding between several models, we'll happily explain the differences and, where possible, demonstrate each one.
Sometimes the exact machine you're interested in may not currently be set up for demonstration. In those cases, we'll often demonstrate the closest equivalent and explain the differences between the models, helping you make an informed decision.
Our aim is to help you understand which features you'll actually use, rather than paying for features you may never need.
Try the Machine Yourself
Watching someone else use a machine is helpful, but nothing beats trying it yourself.
During your demonstration you'll have the opportunity to sit at the machine, sew with it and get a feel for how it operates.
If you regularly sew a particular type of fabric, you're welcome to bring along a sample so you can see how the machine performs on the materials you normally use.
To ensure every demonstration machine performs consistently, we'll normally use our own recommended threads during demonstrations.
For embroidery demonstrations, we use designs that are already prepared for our demonstration machines rather than customer-supplied designs.
Looking for Help with a Specific Project?
If you're struggling with a particular sewing project or technique, a demonstration may not always be the best option.
Instead, we can often arrange a dedicated 30-minute lesson with Stuart, where the focus is on helping you overcome a particular problem or improve your skills.
In many cases, Stuart may also be able to offer advice over the phone before you need to book a lesson.
Multi-Needle Embroidery Demonstrations
Customers considering a BAi multi-needle embroidery machine are often looking to start or grow an embroidery business.
These demonstrations are tailored specifically to commercial embroidery and are only available when we have a suitable demonstration machine set up.
As every business has different requirements, these appointments are usually more in-depth than a standard sewing machine demonstration and are arranged by appointment.
If you purchase a BAi machine, installation and training are available as an additional service. Stuart will remain with you until you're comfortable using your new machine and confident getting started.
Can't Visit the Shop?
If you're unable to travel to us, we may be able to arrange a demonstration or discussion using WhatsApp Video or FaceTime.
While nothing replaces seeing a machine in person, video calls can be an excellent way to answer questions, discuss features and help narrow down your options.
Buying Your Machine
If you've found the perfect machine and it's in stock, you're welcome to take it home the same day.
If your chosen model isn't currently available, we'll order it directly from the supplier. In many cases this means delivery to your door within just a few days.
Some specialist machines, including certain Poolin, FEIYUE and BAi models, may have longer lead times if they're temporarily out of stock. We'll always explain the current availability before you place your order.
Support Doesn't End When You Leave
Choosing your machine is only the beginning.
If you have questions once you've started using it, we're still here to help.
Customers are welcome to:
-
Telephone the shop for advice.
-
Email us with questions.
-
Contact us through the website chat.
-
Arrange an additional one-to-one lesson with Stuart if they would like more hands-on guidance.
If Stuart isn't immediately available, we'll do our best to arrange for him to return your call.
Customers purchasing eligible new machines will also be invited to join Fabric Mouse Club free for the first year once the club is launched.
Brother owners may also choose to arrange private tuition with our independent Brother specialist. These sessions are booked directly with the freelancer and are charged separately.
Why We Recommend a Demonstration
Many customers tell us they nearly bought a completely different machine before visiting us.
A demonstration isn't about convincing you to spend more money. Quite often, it's the opposite.
By understanding what you want to make now—and what you'd like to make in the future—we can recommend a machine that's genuinely suited to your needs.
We've found that customers who have a demonstration often leave feeling much more confident in their choice. They understand what their machine is capable of, what they'll need to learn, and what to expect when they get home.
Buying online without seeing a machine first can sometimes lead to disappointment, simply because the machine wasn't the right fit—not because there was anything wrong with it.
A little time spent choosing carefully can save a great deal of frustration later.
Bringing Family Members
Family members are very welcome to accompany you during your demonstration.
If you're bringing children, we simply ask that they remain supervised throughout your visit. Our showroom contains working sewing machines, sharp tools and other equipment, so we want to make sure everyone stays safe and enjoys their time with us.
Still Not Sure Which Machine Is Right?
That's perfectly normal—and exactly why we're here.
You don't need to arrive knowing which model you want, or even which brand you prefer.
We'll listen to what you'd like to achieve, answer your questions honestly and help you compare the options without any pressure.
Whether you decide to buy from us on the day or simply leave with a better understanding of what's available, we're always happy to help.
If you'd like to arrange a demonstration, get in touch and we'll find a convenient appointment for you.
