Buying Your First Sewing Machine: Support and Aftercare
Reviewed 30 October 2026.
A first sewing machine should be something you feel comfortable setting up and using. Alongside stitch features and price, think about how you will learn the controls and where you can ask for help.
Before you choose
Make a short list of projects, the fabrics and layers involved, and the space available at home. Check the current listing for the exact model rather than assuming that similar names have the same controls or included accessories.
What is included?
Check the presser feet, bobbins, table, cover and other items listed for that machine. An accessory supplied with one model may be optional for another. Demonstration and pre-loved listings describe their own condition, contents and warranty; they should not be treated as new-machine packages.
Getting started at home
Keep the manual beside the machine. Use the correct bobbin, suitable sewing thread and a needle matched to the task. Practise threading and a test seam on offcuts before beginning your project. Our threading guide and thread-choice advice cover common setup problems.
Where can I get help?
Contact Fabric Mouse with the full model, the symptom and photographs of both sides of the stitching. Many setup questions can be discussed before arranging a workshop visit. We also share machine help through our videos; ask us if you need help finding a relevant demonstration.
Servicing and warranty
Fabric Mouse is an authorised service centre and services and repairs all brands. Warranty cover depends on the machine and the documents supplied with it. Read the Warranty Terms and Servicing & Repairs Policy for the process, and use the current service listing for charges.
