Questions We're Often Asked

Choosing Your Machine

Whether you're buying your very first sewing machine, upgrading to something with more features, or finally treating yourself to that embroidery machine you've always wanted, it's completely normal to have questions.

We've helped people choose sewing machines for generations and, if there's one thing we've learnt, it's this:

The best machine isn't always the biggest, the fastest or the most expensive. It's the one that's right for you.

Below are some of the questions we're asked most often when people are choosing a machine. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, just get in touch. We'd much rather spend a few minutes helping you choose the right machine than have you buy the wrong one.

How do I know which sewing machine is right for me?

This is probably the question we're asked more than any other, and the honest answer is...

It depends on what you want to make.

Someone shortening curtains doesn't need the same machine as someone quilting every weekend, and someone starting an embroidery business has very different requirements to someone making the occasional cushion cover.

That's why we don't simply point people towards the most expensive machine. Instead, we'll usually ask a few questions first, such as:

  • Is this your first sewing machine?

  • What do you enjoy making?

  • Are you planning to learn embroidery in the future?

  • What fabrics do you usually sew?

  • Is this a hobby, or will it be used for a business?

  • What's your budget?

Those answers help us narrow the choice down to the machines that genuinely suit your needs. In many cases, we can recommend two or three models that would all do a great job, and then help you decide which one feels right for you.

A Tip from Stuart

"Within a few minutes I can usually narrow the choice down to two or three machines. After that, it's less about the specification sheet and more about which one feels right when you sit down and use it."

Do I need to book a demonstration?

Not always, but we do recommend it.

If you'd like to compare machines or spend some time trying them for yourself, booking an appointment means we can make sure someone is available to give you their full attention.

You're very welcome to call into the shop without an appointment, and if we're free we'll happily show you around. However, as we're often serving customers, carrying out repairs or out delivering machines, we can't always guarantee that a demonstration will be available at short notice.

Booking ahead simply helps us give you the best experience.

Are demonstrations free?

Yes.

We don't charge for demonstrations because we believe choosing the right machine is an important part of buying one.

A demonstration gives you the chance to ask questions, compare different models and, most importantly, have a go yourself. Reading a specification sheet can tell you what a machine does. Sitting in front of it tells you whether it's the right machine for you.

A Tip from Stuart

"You can read every review on the internet, but nothing beats sitting down at the machine yourself. That's usually when people know they've found the right one."

Can I compare more than one machine?

Absolutely.

In fact, we encourage it.

Sometimes two machines look very similar on paper, but once you start using them you'll notice differences in the way they feel, the features they offer or simply how comfortable they are to use.

Comparing machines side by side often makes choosing much easier, and we'll happily explain the differences without filling your head with unnecessary technical jargon.

Can I bring my own fabric?

Yes, and we'd encourage you to if you're working with something unusual.

If you regularly sew denim, upholstery fabric, stretch materials, delicate silks or anything else that you'd like to see stitched before you buy, bring a sample along and we'll do our best to demonstrate it on a suitable machine.

Please note that, for demonstrations, we generally use our own threads, needles and embroidery designs, as we know they're correctly matched to the machines being demonstrated.

Can I take a machine home on the day?

If the machine is in stock, usually yes.

Many customers visit us specifically because they'd like to see a machine first and then take it home the same day.

If the machine isn't currently in stock, we'll explain the expected lead time and keep you updated throughout the process. We believe it's always better to be honest about availability than make promises we can't keep.

Can you help me choose if I'm a complete beginner?

Absolutely.

Everyone starts somewhere, and we never expect you to know all the technical terms before you walk through the door.

We'll explain things in plain English, answer as many questions as you'd like to ask and recommend machines that leave room for your skills to grow, rather than overwhelming you with features you'll never use.

A Tip from Stuart

"The only silly question is the one you didn't ask. I'd much rather spend ten minutes explaining something than have you go home wondering whether you've made the right choice."

Should I buy the biggest machine I can afford?

Not necessarily.

It's easy to think that buying the most expensive machine means you'll never outgrow it, but that's not always the case.

The right machine is the one that matches the type of sewing you enjoy and the features you'll actually use.

Some customers genuinely benefit from a premium machine packed with advanced features. Others would be paying for functions they'll rarely, if ever, switch on.

Our job is to help you find the right balance—not simply the biggest price tag.

A Tip from Stuart

"Buying a sewing machine is a bit like buying walking boots. The most expensive pair isn't automatically the best—they're only the best if they fit what you're planning to do."

Can I buy online if I can't visit the shop?

Of course.

Many of our customers live too far away to visit us in person.

If that's the case, we're always happy to discuss your requirements over the phone, by email or through our website chat. We'll ask the same questions we'd ask if you were sitting in the shop and help you choose the most suitable machine for your needs.

If you'd prefer to visit, that's great too. The choice is entirely yours.

Ordering & Buying From Us

Buying a sewing machine isn't something most people do every day, so it's completely understandable to have questions about placing an order, making payment or receiving your machine.

Below are some of the questions we're asked most often. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please get in touch—we're always happy to help.

Can I reserve a machine?

Yes, in many cases we can.

If you've visited us for a demonstration or spoken to us and just need a little time to make your decision, let us know. We'll always do our best to help where we can.

How long we can reserve a machine for depends on stock levels and demand, so if there's a particular model you're interested in, it's always worth getting in touch sooner rather than later.

Do you offer finance?

Yes.

We know that a sewing or embroidery machine is a significant investment, so finance is available on many of our machines to help spread the cost.

The options available can vary depending on the machine and the order value, so if you'd like to know what's available, just ask and we'll happily explain the choices.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept most major debit and credit cards, bank transfer, PayPal and other payment methods displayed during checkout on our website.

If you're unsure whether we accept a particular payment method, please contact us before placing your order.

Can I collect my online order?

Generally, no.

Orders placed through our website are normally dispatched directly to the delivery address provided when the order is placed. We don't offer a click-and-collect service for standard online orders.

The exception is our multi-needle embroidery machines, where collection may be arranged as part of your purchase.

A Tip from Stuart

"It might sound unusual, but sending online orders straight to your door actually helps us process orders more efficiently and reduces the chance of mistakes."

Can I order a machine in the shop and collect it later?

Yes.

If you've visited us, chosen your machine and would prefer to collect it at a later date, we're usually happy to arrange for it to be delivered to our shop ready for collection when it's convenient for you.

Simply let us know when placing your order and we'll explain the arrangements.

Can somebody collect a machine on my behalf?

Yes, but this normally only applies to serviced machines or multi-needle embroidery machines that have already been arranged for collection.

We do not allow standard online orders to be collected by someone else, as we don't offer collection for those orders.

If someone is collecting on your behalf, they'll need to know:

  • The name the order was placed under.

  • Your order number.

If we're unsure about anything, we'll always check before releasing the machine. It's simply to make sure it ends up with the right person.

Can I change my order after I've placed it?

We always recommend checking your order carefully before completing your purchase, as making changes afterwards isn't always possible.

If you'd like to add a few extra items, we can often do that, provided payment is received before your order is dispatched. In many cases it's actually simpler to place a second order.

If you do place a second order, just let us know. If we're able to combine everything into one parcel, we'll happily refund any unnecessary postage.

Changing machines or making significant alterations to an existing order is generally not possible, so we usually recommend placing a new order if your requirements have changed.

If we ever discover that an item you've ordered has unexpectedly become unavailable, we'll contact you before sending anything different to discuss the available options.

Can I cancel my order?

In many cases, yes.

If you've changed your mind, please contact us as soon as possible. The earlier you let us know, the more likely it is that we're able to help.

If your order has already been dispatched, your cancellation rights will depend on the type of product and where it is in the delivery process.

For full details, please see our Returns & Refunds page.

Do you price match?

Sometimes, yes.

We know price is important, and if you've found the same product elsewhere, we'd much rather have the opportunity to look at it than lose your custom without a conversation.

We'll consider genuine price match requests on identical products that are currently in stock. Simply send us a link to the product and we'll let you know whether we're able to match it.

A Tip from Stuart

"If you're about to order somewhere else because of the price, give us a call first. Sometimes we can help, and even if we can't, you'll know you've checked."

For more information, please see our Price Match Promise.

Why should I buy from Fabric Mouse?

That's a fair question.

Buying a sewing machine isn't just about choosing the machine itself—it's about the support that comes with it.

Whether it's helping you choose the right model, demonstrating how it works, servicing it in the future or simply answering a question when you're stuck, we're here long after you've taken your machine home.

Rather than trying to squeeze everything into this FAQ, we've created a dedicated page explaining what makes Fabric Mouse different.

Read our "Why Buy From Fabric Mouse?" page.

Delivery & Receiving Your Machine

Waiting for a new sewing machine to arrive is exciting, and we know you'll probably be keen to get sewing as soon as it arrives.

Below are some of the questions we're asked most often about delivery, receiving your machine and getting started.

If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please get in touch. We're always happy to help.

How long will my order take to arrive?

That depends on the machine you've ordered.

Many of the products on our website are held in stock and can be dispatched quickly, while others are ordered directly from our suppliers or arrive as part of scheduled deliveries.

Wherever possible, we give estimated delivery times on the product page. If there are any unexpected delays, we'll always keep you informed.

Why don't you give exact delivery dates?

Because we'd rather be honest than make promises we can't keep.

Many sewing machines travel a long way before they reach us. Others are held in stock in the UK in the Brand's warehouse. Depending on the manufacturer, they may be shipped by sea, pass through customs, be transported across the UK and then prepared before they're ready to leave us.

Most of the time everything runs exactly as planned. Occasionally, weather, shipping delays, customs checks or supplier issues can affect the journey.

Rather than promising a date that might change, we'll always give you the most accurate information we have at the time and keep you updated if anything changes.

What should I do when my machine arrives?

First of all...

Enjoy it!

There's nothing quite like opening a new sewing machine for the first time.

Before you throw the packaging away and start planning your first project, we recommend taking a few minutes to:

  • Check that your machine has arrived in good condition.

  • Make sure all the accessories listed in the manual are present.

  • Keep the original packaging somewhere safe if you have the space.

  • Read through the quick-start guide or instruction manual before switching the machine on.

Those few minutes can save a lot of head scratching later.

What happens if my machine arrives damaged?

Thankfully, it's very unusual.

If your machine arrives with obvious signs of damage, please don't use it.

Instead, contact us as soon as possible and, if you can, send us photographs of both the packaging and the damage. This helps us investigate quickly and get the problem resolved.

The sooner we're made aware of the issue, the sooner we can start putting things right.

Do I need to keep the original box?

We know...

Cardboard boxes have an amazing habit of taking up exactly the bit of space you'd rather use for something else.

However, if you possibly can, we strongly recommend keeping your machine's original packaging.

It wasn't designed simply to look nice on a shop shelf. It's been specifically engineered to protect your machine during transport, and it's by far the safest way to return it if it ever needs servicing or warranty work.

Over the years we've received machines wrapped in blankets, bubble wrap, towels and all sorts of creative packaging. Unfortunately, none of them protect a sewing machine as well as the box it arrived in.

A Tip from Stuart

"If you really can't keep the whole box, at least keep the moulded inserts. They're the clever bit!"

Will my machine be ready to use straight away?

In most cases, yes.

Your machine will arrive with everything needed to get started, although you'll usually need to fit the needle, thread the machine and wind or insert a bobbin before you begin.

Some machines may also require a little assembly, such as attaching an embroidery unit or accessory table, but everything is designed to be straightforward and is covered in the instruction manual.

If you get stuck, just ask.

Can my order be delivered to a different address?

Yes, in many cases.

For security reasons, we may occasionally need to carry out additional checks before dispatching high-value items to an address different from the billing address.

This is simply to help protect both you and us against fraud.

If we need anything further from you, we'll let you know before your order is dispatched.

What happens if I'm not at home when my order arrives?

That depends on the courier and the type of item you've ordered.

Many couriers will leave instructions explaining how to rearrange delivery or collect your parcel.

For larger or higher-value deliveries, a signature may be required, so it's worth keeping an eye on your tracking information if one has been provided.

Can I choose a specific delivery day?

Sometimes.

If you're ordering a larger machine or something that requires a planned delivery, we'll always do our best to work with you where possible.

For standard parcel deliveries, we're generally reliant on the courier's schedule and unfortunately can't guarantee a particular day or time.

If you have a specific requirement, please contact us before placing your order and we'll advise you on the options available.

Why do you ask for my phone number?

We promise it isn't so we can chat about sewing all afternoon!

Your phone number allows us or the courier to contact you quickly if there's a problem with your delivery, if we need to confirm any details, or if there's an unexpected delay.

It's often the quickest way to prevent a small issue becoming a much bigger one.

Did You Know?

The packaging your sewing machine arrives in has usually been designed specifically for that model. It's tested to protect the machine during transport and is one of the reasons courier damage is thankfully very uncommon.

Warranty, Repairs & Servicing

Even the best sewing machines occasionally need a little attention.

Whether your machine has developed a fault, needs a routine service or you're simply not sure if something is working as it should, we're here to help.

Many problems turn out to be something simple, so if you're ever unsure, we'd always recommend getting in touch before sending your machine to us. A quick conversation can often save you time, money and an unnecessary journey.

My machine has stopped working. Is it covered under warranty?

Not necessarily.

One of the biggest misconceptions about warranties is that if a machine is still within its warranty period, every repair will automatically be free of charge. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

A manufacturer's warranty is there to protect you against faults caused by defects in the machine itself. It doesn't cover every issue that might arise during normal ownership.

For example, warranties generally don't cover things such as:

  • Damage caused by accidental misuse.

  • Using the wrong accessories, needles or bobbins.

  • Lack of routine cleaning or maintenance.

  • Wear and tear on consumable parts.

  • Damage caused during transport.

  • Problems resulting from incorrect operation.

Every repair is assessed individually, and if we believe a fault is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, we'll process it accordingly.

If it isn't covered, we'll always explain why before carrying out any chargeable work.

A Tip from Stuart

"Please don't let this put you off getting in touch. We'd much rather have a look and tell you it's covered than have you worry about it at home."

My machine has stopped working. What should I do first?

Don't panic.

Before assuming your machine has developed a fault, it's worth checking a few simple things.

Many of the problems we hear about turn out to be something straightforward, such as:

  • The machine has been threaded incorrectly.

  • The presser foot isn't in the correct position.

  • The bobbin hasn't been inserted properly.

  • A needle has become bent or damaged.

  • Lint has built up around the hook area.

If you're unsure, give us a call or send us an email. We'd much rather spend a few minutes helping you than have you package your machine up unnecessarily.

What if it's something I've done?

Please don't feel embarrassed.

Every sewer, from complete beginners to experienced professionals, has threaded a machine incorrectly, forgotten to lower the presser foot or fitted a needle the wrong way round at some point.

It happens far more often than you might think.

We'll never make you feel silly for asking a question, and many issues can be solved without your machine ever leaving home.

Do you repair machines you didn't sell?

Yes, in many cases.

Although we'd love every sewing machine in the country to have come from Fabric Mouse, we know that's not always the case.

If it's a make and model we're able to service or repair, we'll usually be happy to help.

If we can't, we'll do our best to point you in the right direction.

Do I need to arrange the courier?

Yes.

The owner of the machine is responsible for arranging transport to and from our workshop.

This gives you the freedom to choose the courier or delivery method that works best for you, whether that's a courier service you already use or delivering the machine in person if appropriate.

Once your machine is ready, we'll let you know so you can arrange its return journey.

Do I need the original box?

If you still have it, absolutely.

The original packaging is the safest way to transport your machine and gives it the best possible protection while travelling.

If you no longer have the box, don't worry—we'll advise you on the safest way to package your machine before you send it.

Should I clean my machine before sending it?

A quick clean is always appreciated, but it's not essential.

Removing excess lint, thread and any personal items from the accessory compartment can make it easier for our engineer to begin work.

Please remember to remove any fabrics, embroidery hoops or accessories that aren't related to the fault unless we've specifically asked you to include them.

How long will a repair take?

It depends on the fault and whether any replacement parts are required.

Many repairs can be completed quite quickly, while others may take longer if specialist parts need to be ordered.

We'll always do our best to complete repairs as efficiently as possible and keep you informed if anything is likely to take longer than expected.

What happens if you find something else wrong?

Occasionally, while investigating one fault, we may discover another issue that wasn't immediately obvious.

If that happens, we'll contact you before carrying out any additional chargeable work.

We believe you should always know what work is being carried out on your machine and why.

Will you contact me when my machine is ready?

Yes.

As soon as your machine is ready for collection or return, we'll let you know.

If you've arranged for a courier to collect your machine, we'll simply let you know when it's ready so you can organise the return journey.

Do you offer servicing as well as repairs?

Yes.

Regular servicing helps keep your sewing machine running smoothly and can often identify minor issues before they become major repairs.

Even if your machine appears to be working perfectly, routine servicing is one of the best ways to protect your investment and keep it sewing at its best for years to come.

What's the difference between a service and a repair?

A service is routine maintenance. Think of it like servicing a car—it helps keep everything running smoothly, even if nothing appears to be wrong.

A repair is carried out when something isn't working correctly and needs diagnosing and fixing.

Sometimes a machine only needs a service. Sometimes it needs a repair. Occasionally it needs both, and we'll always explain what's required before carrying out any chargeable work. But please note, if you think your machine needs a repair please book it in as a repair -it will get a service as part of the repair. There's no need to book it in for both.

A Final Tip from Stuart

"If you're ever unsure whether your machine needs repairing, servicing or just a little advice, ask us first. A quick conversation can often save you time, money and an unnecessary trip."

Why Buy From Fabric Mouse?

That's a fair question.

You can buy a sewing machine from all sorts of places these days. A quick search online will show hundreds of websites, marketplaces and retailers all selling what appear to be very similar machines.

So why choose Fabric Mouse?

For us, buying a sewing machine has never just been about selling a box. It's about helping you find a machine you'll still be enjoying years from now.

That's why we do things a little differently.

If you're simply looking for the absolute cheapest price online, we might not always be the right choice.

If you're looking for advice before you buy, support afterwards and somewhere to turn if you ever need help, we'd like to think you'll feel at home here.

We Help You Choose the Right Machine

One of the most common things we hear is:

"I don't know where to start."

And that's perfectly normal.

There are hundreds of sewing machines available, all with different features, prices and capabilities. Choosing between them can feel overwhelming.

Rather than trying to sell you the biggest or most expensive machine, we'll ask about the projects you enjoy, your experience and what you'd like your next machine to do.

Sometimes the right answer is a £300 machine.

Sometimes it's a £3,000 machine.

The important thing is that it's the right machine for you.

A Tip from Stuart

"The best sewing machine isn't the one with the most features. It's the one you'll enjoy using every time you sit down to sew."

We Know the Machines We Sell

When you ask us a question, you're not speaking to a call centre reading from a script.

The machines we sell are the machines we demonstrate, service, repair and support.

We've threaded them, adjusted them, tested them and, in some cases, even worked directly with the manufacturers to develop features we'd like to see included.

That practical experience means we can usually answer questions from real experience rather than simply reading the specification sheet.

We Believe Support Starts Before You Buy

Sometimes customers worry about asking too many questions.

Please don't.

Choosing a sewing machine is an important decision, and we'd much rather spend the time helping you understand the differences between models than have you buy something that isn't right for the way you sew.

If you're unsure, ask.

If you'd like to compare machines, ask.

If you'd like a demonstration, ask.

Helping people choose confidently is one of the best parts of our job.

We're Still Here After the Sale

Buying a sewing machine is just the beginning.

Questions don't stop once the box has been opened, and neither does our support.

Whether you need advice, servicing, repairs or simply a little guidance, we'll always do our best to help.

Many of our customers have been coming back to us for years—not because their machines keep breaking, but because they know they'll always find a friendly face and honest advice.

We Repair What We Sell

There's a big difference between selling a sewing machine and understanding how it works.

Because we service and repair many of the machines we sell, we see them throughout their working lives, not just when they're brand new.

That experience helps us recommend machines with confidence and give practical advice based on real ownership rather than marketing brochures.

We Believe in Honest Advice

Every sewing machine has strengths.

Every sewing machine has limitations.

We'll happily tell you both.

If we think a machine isn't the best fit for your needs, we'll say so—even if it means recommending a different model.

We'd much rather help you make the right decision than simply make a sale.

We Enjoy What We Do

Sewing machines have been part of our lives for a long time, and we still enjoy talking about them.

Whether it's explaining how something works, demonstrating a feature you've never seen before or helping solve a problem, we genuinely enjoy sharing what we've learned.

That enthusiasm is something we hope comes across every time you visit us, give us a call or send us an email.

We Believe Sewing Should Be Enjoyable

At the end of the day, a sewing machine is just a tool.

The exciting part is what you create with it.

Whether you're making clothes, quilting, repairing treasured items, starting a small business or simply learning a new skill, we're proud to play a small part in that journey.

If we can help you enjoy sewing a little more, we've done our job.

A Final Thought

One of our favourite moments isn't when someone buys a machine.

It's when they come back a few years later and say,

"I'm so glad you recommended this one."

To us, that's the best compliment we could ask for.

It tells us we didn't just help someone buy a sewing machine.

We helped them choose the right one.

Getting Started With Your Sewing Machine

Whether you've just unpacked your very first sewing machine or you've upgraded after years of sewing, there's always a little learning curve with a new machine.

The good news is that most problems new owners experience aren't faults at all—they're simply part of getting to know how the machine works.

Below are some of the questions we're asked most often when customers are getting started.

Should I read the instruction manual?

Yes... although you don't need to memorise it!

Every machine is slightly different, and your instruction manual has been written specifically for your model.

It's the quickest way to learn where everything is, how your machine has been designed to work and what accessories are included.

Even experienced sewers often discover features they didn't know their machine had.

A Tip from Stuart

"Keep the manual somewhere you'll remember. You probably won't need it every week, but when you do, you'll be glad you know where it is."

Why won't my machine sew properly?

Before assuming something is wrong with the machine, check the basics.

The vast majority of sewing problems are caused by one of these:

  • The machine has been threaded incorrectly.

  • The presser foot wasn't raised while threading.

  • The bobbin has been inserted incorrectly.

  • The needle is bent, blunt or fitted the wrong way round.

  • The machine needs cleaning.

  • The tension has been adjusted unnecessarily.

If you've checked those things and you're still having problems, get in touch. We'll always do our best to help.

Why does my thread keep breaking?

Thread breakages are usually caused by one of a handful of common issues rather than a fault with the machine.

Check that:

  • The machine has been threaded correctly.

  • The thread is suitable for your project.

  • The needle is the correct size and isn't damaged.

  • The spool is feeding smoothly.

  • There isn't any lint caught around the tension discs or hook area.

Sometimes simply rethreading the machine from the beginning solves the problem.

Why is my machine skipping stitches?

Skipping stitches is almost always related to the needle.

A bent, blunt or incorrect needle can stop the hook from picking up the thread properly.

It's also worth checking:

  • You're using the correct needle for your fabric.

  • The needle has been inserted fully.

  • The flat side of the needle is facing the correct direction.

  • The fabric isn't being pulled through the machine.

A new needle is often the quickest and cheapest solution.

Which needle should I use?

The answer depends on what you're sewing.

Different fabrics need different needle types and sizes, and using the correct needle can make an enormous difference to the quality of your stitching.

If you're unsure which needle to use, we've created a free Sewing Room Cheat Sheet that explains common needle types, thread choices, stabilisers and other useful sewing information.

It's designed to be printed and kept near your sewing machine for quick reference.

Can I use any thread?

Good quality thread makes a bigger difference than many people realise.

Very old, brittle or low-quality thread can lead to breakages, uneven tension and poor stitch quality.

Whenever possible, use thread that's appropriate for both your project and your machine.

If you're unsure, just ask—we're always happy to recommend suitable thread.

Do I need to clean my sewing machine?

Yes.

Even occasional sewing creates lint, dust and small thread fibres inside the machine.

A quick clean every so often helps keep everything running smoothly and can prevent many common sewing problems.

Always follow the cleaning instructions in your manual and avoid using compressed air, as it can push lint further into the machine.

Did You Know?

A surprising number of machines sent in for repair simply need a good clean. Regular maintenance is one of the easiest ways to keep your machine sewing beautifully.

Should I oil my machine?

That depends on the machine.

Some machines require occasional oiling, while many modern domestic machines are designed to need very little routine lubrication by the owner.

Always follow the instructions in your manual. Using the wrong oil or oiling parts that aren't designed to be lubricated can sometimes do more harm than good.

If you're unsure, ask before applying any oil.

Why is my tension wrong?

Thread tension is often blamed when stitches don't look right, but it's surprisingly rare for the tension itself to be the real problem.

In many cases, the cause is actually:

  • Incorrect threading.

  • A damaged needle.

  • Poor quality thread.

  • Lint in the machine.

  • The presser foot being lowered while threading.

Before reaching for the tension dial, check the basics first.

A Tip from Stuart

"One of the most common mistakes we see is people adjusting the tension before checking everything else. Most of the time, the tension was fine all along."

Can I use any bobbin?

No.

Although many bobbins look similar, they aren't all the same size or shape.

Using the wrong bobbin can cause poor stitch quality, noisy running and thread problems.

Always use the type recommended for your machine.

Where can I learn more?

We're always happy to answer questions, whether you've bought your machine from us or you're simply looking for some advice.

We also have a growing collection of videos, guides and downloadable resources to help you get the very best from your machine.

Don't forget to download our free Sewing Room Cheat Sheet, which covers useful topics such as:

  • Needle selection.

  • Thread choices.

  • Stabiliser and backing guides.

  • Quick sewing references.

  • Handy tips to keep near your machine.

It's designed to be printed, pinned up in your sewing room and referred to whenever you need it.

A Final Tip from Stuart

"Nobody was born knowing how to thread a sewing machine. Every experienced sewer started exactly where you are now. Take your time, enjoy the learning process and don't be afraid to ask questions."

Visiting Fabric Mouse

Whether you're buying your first sewing machine, upgrading to something new or simply looking for some friendly advice, we'd love to welcome you to Fabric Mouse.

Here are some of the questions we're asked before people visit us.

Do I need to book an appointment?

Not always.

You're welcome to visit during our normal opening hours to browse, ask questions or have a look around.

However, if you're travelling a long way, would like to see a particular machine or would like a one-to-one demonstration, we strongly recommend booking an appointment first.

That way we can make sure the right machine is available and that someone has time set aside just for you.

Can I try the machines before I buy?

Absolutely.

In fact, we'd encourage it.

Reading specifications online is one thing, but sitting down and sewing on a machine tells you far more than any brochure ever could.

There's no pressure and no obligation to buy. We simply want you to feel confident that the machine is right for you.

Can I bring my own fabric?

Yes.

If you regularly sew a particular type of fabric, bring some along.

Trying a machine on the materials you actually use is one of the best ways to compare different models and decide which feels right for you.

How long does a demonstration take?

That depends on you.

Some customers know exactly which machine they'd like to see and only need twenty minutes.

Others enjoy comparing several models and asking lots of questions, which can take considerably longer.

We'd much rather take our time than rush you into making a decision.

Is there any pressure to buy?

None whatsoever.

We know buying a sewing machine is an important decision, and we'd much rather you leave feeling well informed than feeling rushed.

Whether you buy from us that day, come back a few weeks later or simply leave with some helpful advice, that's absolutely fine.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course.

Whether it's a partner, family member or friend, they're very welcome to come along.

Sometimes it's useful to have another pair of ears, especially when you're comparing different machines.

Is there parking?

Yes.

Parking is available nearby, making it easy to visit the shop and, if you're collecting a larger machine, transport it safely home.

If you're unsure where to park or have accessibility requirements, please contact us before your visit and we'll be happy to help.

Can I buy a machine and take it home the same day?

Sometimes, yes.

If the machine is in stock and ready to go, you may be able to take it home with you.

If it isn't immediately available, we'll explain the expected timescale and the options available.

Do you only sell sewing machines?

No.

Alongside sewing machines, we stock a wide range of accessories, threads, stabilisers, embroidery supplies, scissors, cabinets and other sewing essentials.

If there's something specific you're looking for, it's always worth giving us a call before travelling so we can confirm it's in stock.

Can you help me even if I didn't buy my machine from you?

In many cases, yes.

Whether you're looking for advice, servicing, repairs or simply have a question, we'll always do our best to help.

If we can't help directly, we'll usually be able to point you in the right direction.

A Final Tip from Stuart

"If you're making a special journey to see us, give us a call first. We'd much rather have the machine set up and waiting for you than discover it's just gone out on demonstration or sold that morning."

General Questions

Here are a few more questions we're asked from time to time that don't quite fit anywhere else.

If you can't find the answer you're looking for anywhere in our Help Centre, please get in touch. We'll always do our best to help.

Do you buy second-hand sewing machines?

We regularly accept sewing machines in part exchange against selected new machines, subject to their condition and suitability.

If you're thinking of upgrading, please contact us with details of your current machine and we'll let you know whether it's something we're able to accept.

You can find out more on our Machine Trade-In Programme page.

Do you sell pre-loved machines?

Yes.

From time to time we have carefully selected pre-loved machines available.

Availability changes regularly, so if you're looking for something in particular it's always worth asking or checking our website.

Can you identify my sewing machine?

We'll certainly try.

If you can send us a few clear photographs, including the model number and any identification plate, we'll do our best to identify it and advise where possible.

Can you supply spare parts?

For many makes and models, yes.

The availability of spare parts depends on the manufacturer, the age of the machine and whether the parts are still being produced.

If you know your machine model, let us know and we'll be happy to check.

Do you sharpen scissors?

No.

Although we sell a wide range of sewing scissors, we don't currently offer a scissor sharpening service.

If this changes in the future, we'll update our website.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

We're working on it. But they're not yet available.

Can I order replacement manuals?

For many current machines, replacement manuals are available either from the manufacturer or as downloadable copies.

If you're struggling to find one, let us know your machine model and we'll point you in the right direction wherever possible.

Do you stock every machine shown on your website?

Not always.

Some machines are held in stock, while others are ordered from our suppliers.

Each product page will normally give an indication of availability, but if you're making a special journey or need a machine by a particular date, we recommend contacting us first.

Can I order spare needles, feet and accessories from you?

Absolutely.

We stock a wide range of genuine and compatible accessories for many popular sewing and embroidery machines.

If you're unsure which accessory fits your machine, just ask—we'll be happy to help you find the correct one.

What if my question isn't answered here?

Please ask.

We know sewing machines can sometimes raise unexpected questions, and we'd much rather you ask than spend hours searching the internet or worrying that something is wrong.

If we know the answer, we'll happily share it.

If we don't, we'll tell you honestly and do our best to point you towards someone who can help.

A Final Thought

At Fabric Mouse, we don't expect everyone to know everything about sewing machines.

That's our job.

Whether you're buying your very first machine or you've been sewing for decades, you're always welcome to ask questions.

After all, every expert started as a beginner, and we'd be delighted to help you enjoy sewing just that little bit more.
